How To Scale The Original Object Down

Enter the (Scale) for 1/120th scale enter a 120, or for 1/76th scale, enter a 76.
In the box labeled (Real Size) enter the measurement of a original object either in inches or centimeters.
Click the button labeled (inch) (inches) or (cm) (centimeters) to calculate.
The scaled down size of that object is displayed in the box (Scale Size).
To Recalculate your result click the (inch) or (cm) button.

EXAMPLE: For N scale (1:160), enter 160 in the 'Scale' box. If a real-sized building is 20 foot (240 inches) long you would enter 240 in the 'Real Size' box and click the nearby 'inch' button. To convert to 'Scale Size' click the next 'Inch' button to reveal the correct conversion to 1.5 inches. So, in N scale you would make your 20 foot long building 1.5 inches long.

Example: To make a scale model of Noah's Ark: Enter 120 for the scale size. Enter 5420 in the Real Size box. This will give you a length of 45.16". The Ark was 450' long which equals 5420". Enter 120 for the scale size again. Enter 900 in the Real Size Box. This will give you a width of 7.5" wide. The Ark was 75' wide which equals 900". Enter 120 for the scale size again. Enter 540 in the Real Size box. This will give you a height of 4.5". The Ark was 45' in height which equals 540".

The window was 1 cubit or about 18". If you convert this to the above scale its less than 1/8 of a inch. This would not be something you would want to add to the ark because it would be too small to see. Instead get an 8' by 1" piece of cabinet trim. Cut it in half and add it to the top center of the Ark to represent and area for venting etc. (This part is speculation but the Ark must have had venting.)

I chose the scale of 120 because it would make an acceptable ark "mailbox". The mailbox door is about 4.5 " high and the width is 7.5 " which is big enough for letters and Acts & Facts Magazine (FREE), Answers Magazine and Creation Magazine. The length on the inside only needs to be about one foot. So just add another small piece of wood on the inside of the Ark about 1' back from the door.

Also get some surface mount hinges for the Ark "mailbox" front door to open and close. Use maybe 2 3/4" by 2 1/8". Also get a knob of some kind for the front door of the Ark "Mailbox". Cut door height 4" to allow for top cut 1" overhang. Use woodfile to \ angle top of door and bottom of overhang for a snug fit when door is closed.

You can get these both at lowes or home depot cheap for less than 3 dollars.

I decided to use cedar boards from home depot. 3/4 " x 5 1/2" x 6' Western Red Cedar Fence Board $3.35 each These are easy to cut and have a minimal tendency to warp or shrink. Also naturally protects against mildew, rot and decay. Easily accepts paint or stain, if desired over the timeless graying look of naturally aged cedar (typically a 2-3 year aging process) Get a small box of 1 1/2 " galvanized rust-resistant nails.

You can make things almost any scale. You must know the original length, width and height and convert these to inches or centimeters to enter into the calculator.

Its important to make the Ark to scale. By doing so it becomes evident just how large Noah's Ark was that God told Noah to build and save his family from the worldwide flood.

In Genesis 6, God gives us the overall size and a few features of the Ark. Using an 18-inch cubit (a minimum size), the Ark was 450 feet long, 45 feet high, and 75 feet wide, with three interior "stories" and a "window" on top. Other details are speculative.

A scale of one inch equals 160 inches is recommended because it is "N" gauge in model railroad terms, and many objects in that scale are readily available for comparison. With this scale, the model is 33.75 inches long, 3.375 inches high, 5.625 inches wide. The finished model and platform at this scale are small enough for easy transport, but large enough to make an impression.
The "N" gauge scale is used because scale people, animals, and trees may be purchased in a model railroad store.
The "A" scale can be used to make a scale model of Noah's Ark and incorporate a mailbox into it for display near your driveway. I'm am sure it will get people's attention. Some will know what it is and some may not. When someone wants to know what the Ark "Mailbox" represents you can tell them what it says in Genesis and why Noah built the Ark.
