Domino's Pizza Delivery Drone
Aerial pizza delivery may sound futuristic but Domino's has been given the green light to test New Zealand pizza delivery via drones.
The fast food chain has partnered with drone business Flirty to launch the first commercial drone delivery service in the world, starting later this year.
Domino's Group chief executive and managing director, Don Meij said the company had been investigating innovative and new delivery methods as business had grown.
This included looking at robotic delivery, which the government is still considering.
It will offer drone delivery specials at the launch of the trial with plans to extend the dimensions, weight and distance of the deliveries throughout the trial, based on results and customer feedback.
"With the increased number of deliveries we make each year, we were faced with the challenge of ensuring our delivery times continue to decrease and that we strive to offer our customers new and progressive ways of ordering from us," Meij said.
According to Meij, the company had been investigating delivery options for a while, saying that it didn't make sense to have a two tonne machine delivering a two kilogram order.
He said the use of drones offered a faster and safer option as well as removing barriers such as traffic and distance, meaning they could deliver further afield and faster in urban areas.
"Domino's is all about providing customers with choice and making customer's lives easier," Meij said. "Adding innovation such as drone deliveries means customers can experience cutting-edge technology and the convenience of having their Supreme pizza delivered via air to their door. This is the future."
If this is the future where does that leave the pizza delivery guy? If these drones can deliver faster and don't need a tip the future for delivery guys is in question. Especially when Domino's chef executive Meij says, "The company had been investigating delivery options for a while, saying that it didn't make sense to have a two tonne machine delivering a two kilogram order.
I don't care how much faster the pizza gets delivered. I don't want a drone hovering over my house for several reasons. I think this is a bad idea. Personally I like Pizza Hut a lot more than domino's.
How would this thing let you know it has arrived? A horn, or a greeting like, "Hello I am your friendly neighborhood pizza drone. I don't require a tip. I have a camera watching you so if your swipe the pizza it is recorded. I can only wait 5 min and I don't have change."
If I was out in the yard and this thing flew up all of a sudden and blew a horn or something It could be the last pizza it ever delivered. :)
What is it gets the wrong address? Will Domino's give you a free pizza for you trouble? What if the thing hits your car, house, you or anthing else on your property? Does your homeowners insurance cover drone deliveries?
It can't knock or ring a door bell, so if you are busy in you residence doing something and you don't hear it tooting a horn or something what then? Are you still responsible for paying for the pizza? What if the thing delivers the wrong pizza or your order is wrong. How do you talk to a drone?
What if you just happen to be flying your own drone and oh no you accidently or on purpose hit the Domino's drone?
Is the next thing they will push on us "drone insurance"? I think drone delivery will be more trouble than its worth.
In the south if one one these things goes off course etc wow, it will be shot down like a clay pigeon!!!
If they pass by on a preset course it could get interesting. I can hear it now, "PULL"!
If a drone follows the highway and it gets in the way of traffic then what? You talk about road rage. Dominos will go out of business and the the future will not be what the chief executive at Domino's pizza thought it would be plus Meij will be out of a job.
"Avoid the Noid." drone.
